Biomanufacturing is a production method that draws on biological systems to create biomaterials, mainly within the medicine and food and beverage industries. Recent applications include biology-based therapeutics and lab-grown meats. Using biomanufacturing to reengineer biological organisms enables scientific and engineering innovation, and integrating AI with biomanufacturing allows manufacturers to implement smart processes. Transitioning to smart systems currently has its limitations as it relies on processing large datasets that currently aren’t centralized. Biomanufacturing at scale for commercial use remains problematic. However advances like single-use bioprocessing systems seek to address this obstacle and are likely to impact the agriculture and chemical industries.
