While lab-grown meat receives more attention, lab-grown leather is also promising. Startup Virtolabs’s process begins with taking a biopsy, or collecting cells, from a live animal. These cells are then cultivated in a nutrient-rich environment and formed into tissue that is then turned into leather. The result is a complex material that maintains the complexity of traditional hides. This process could provide consumers with the luxurious quality of leather from a more environmentally friendly and humane process.
