Some experiments, like the one mentioned earlier from the National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, use lasers rather than magnets to achieve net positive energy. Scientists there shot a cluster of lasers at a capsule containing hydrogen isotope fuels to achieve their feat of attaining break-even fusion power. German startup Marvel Fusion has taken a different approach to lasers from that of the National Ignition Facility. Rather than using indirect laser fusion, Marvel uses direct drive laser fusion. This process is more efficient and requires less energy to ignite and burn fuel. Marvel has raised $65.9 million since its founding in 2019, including $38.5 million in its most recent round.
