Lufthansa’s fleet of 10 Boeing 777F cargo planes now have a sleek new sharkskin exterior coating to reduce drag and emissions. The lightweight AeroSHARK wraps are based on the microscopic riblets of a shark’s skin. When applied to the lower half of the fuselage, the skin lowers emissions by 0.8%. The film can last for at least four years with zero maintenance and weighs just about the same as one passenger with baggage. Since the skins were installed at the beginning of 2022, Lufthansa estimates that the 10 planes have saved gas and emissions equivalent to 48 individual freight flights between Frankfurt and Shanghai.
